Testimonials
Connie S.
The memories in Connie’s house go back three generations. Her home, built in the 1920s, has hosted family for holidays and birthday celebrations.
“It’s a small house,” Connie said. “But we like to pack in here.”
Working several jobs to make ends meet, Connie had things under control. She was studying at Indiana State University to get her bachelor’s in art therapy. She volunteered at a local nursing home. Life was good.
But with only seven years left to pay on her mortgage, life threw Connie a curve ball. Her private home healthcare client passed away. On top of that, her day job as a case manager fell through. She was looking at a $50,000 loss in yearly income.
She tried working multiple part-time jobs and selling personal items to make ends meet.
However, within a few months she realized that her income couldn’t cover her expenses. She was three months behind on her mortgage. Connie maintained open communication with her credit union about her situation.
“My mind said there must be help out there,” she said. “I used my case management skills I’d used for others for myself.”
She remembered the Hardest Hit Fund billboards from a few years ago. She picked up the phone and asked the Hardest Hit Fund for help.
“I’d exhausted everything I had,” she said. “It got to the point that I needed to either ask for help or lose my home.”
Connie was connected to Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE). Regina Flowers at CAPE was able to help Connie avoid foreclosure through mortgage reinstatement assistance.
“When I received the call that I was approved for assistance, I cried and cried,” she said. “I thank God, and I thank the program for helping me and allowing me to keep my dignity. I felt very blessed. And still do.”
For homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage, Connie offers this advice: “Don’t worry about your pride, and don’t let it stop you. Get help! You will be treated with dignity and respect.”
Connie now has hope that she can retire in her beloved home and continue to host many boisterous family gatherings.
“This home is part of our family, and thanks to Indiana’s Hardest Hit Fund I have hope that it will stay in our family for many generations to come.”
